After opening the harvested milkweed pods, the class wrapped the seeds in a moist paper towel to prepare them for planting. In groups, 18-35 seeds were put on each paper towel and rolled up in plastic wrap.
Next, the milkweed seed was planted along with other flowers. They were all planted in containers and placed in trays under the new plant lights.
Measurements were taken and marked outdoors in the area of the school lawn (south of the school), with flags that will be used for the butterfly garden. Math skills were put to use to find the diameter and circumference in the measurements. Now we will wait for the plants to bloom and the next phase of the Monarch Rescue Project!

Sts. Peter & Paul School in Nauvoo, Illinois, is a two-time recipient of the NCEA Monarch Rescue Grant. Grantee schools will share monthly updates on their efforts in researching, planning, building, and maintaining the very best monarch-friendly butterfly gardens possible. They will monitor the success or failure of the garden, learning from problems they encounter to plan improvements in subsequent years. Most important, the developing learning modules will incorporate Catholic social teaching on stewardship of the resources God has provided us.
