This update was contributed by Dr. Melanie B. Verges, Superintendent of Diocese of Baton Rouge Catholic Schools.
We are happy to share that most schools are reopening rather quickly, though three schools had significant flooding. Through herculean efforts, one school has been relocated and the other two with significant damage will be open before Labor Day!
The bad news is that many of our families and faculty/staff members have experienced tremendous loss – homes, vehicles and personal belongings. Your help would be truly appreciated.
There are several ways to help.
- First, we ask for prayers. The Baton Rouge community has felt the power of prayers from across the world and has experienced much peace in the midst of the emergency. Bishop Muench describes the flooding as an “unwelcomed tragedy filled with opportunity for grace.” Amen!
- On the Catholic Schools Office website (csobr.org ), you will find a link to a donation page where you can give funds. Many schools need to replace textbooks and other materials. Also, faculty members and parents need help with tuition for their children because they have suffered such tremendous loss. A donation of any size is appreciated because it can be combined with other donations to help people who are suffering.
- In addition, on our website there will be a list of schools and their identified need, which includes prayer cards and gift cards so that families can get needed items in the months to come. Please contact those schools directly if you would like to help them.
- Lastly, please spread the word to anyone who would like to be part of the recovery. Their thoughts, prayers, and donations make a tremendous difference!
There are no words to adequately describe the way your kindness makes us feel. Thank you!
Blessings,
Mel
