2017 Youth Virtues, Valor and Vision Award Winner: James Bledsoe

James has been praised by his peers as a “compassionate, socially active, and hardworking young man who is enthusiastic and always willing to help others.” He has grown immeasurably in his time at St. Joseph’s, exhibiting the highest degree of integrity, patience, leadership and selflessness. A teacher has ranked James as one of the best students he has worked with in the last fifteen years, describing James as a true Christian Humanist, as he exhibits Catholic leadership skills effortlessly.

James has been one of the school’s strongest student role models and recently has developed quite a reputation for printing parts on the school’s 3-D printer, including a prototype prosthetic hand to aid children in need. James has even contacted one of the children’s hospitals in hopes to provide his creation to help others.

While James has a great interest in technology, this has not limited his other interests or activities. James has served with Campus Ministry during his time at St. Joseph High School and has been an altar server for eight years, as well as a participant in his parish’s youth group. James served as a Vacation Bible School Volunteer and a camp counselor at Camp Fatima. James has been the team manager for the St. Joseph High School hockey team, played on the golf team, and has been in the school AV and Digital Media programs as well as its television and radio networks. He has spearheaded a charity bike drive for the last three years with the robotics team to help lower income families, as well as a book drive for a program called “Success Won’t Wait.”

James Bledsoe is a well-rounded, hard-working individual that his family and school can be proud of.

James, by your work, your vision, and your faith in your ability to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate, you have become someone who can and will change the world. We are so very proud of you and your achievements, and congratulate your family, your church, your school, your teachers and your mentor for supporting and enabling your vision and ambition for doing good.

Project:
James is interested in using technology tools, especially 3-D printing to help others. He has recently used his own 3-D printer to create prosthetic hands for children and has researched the need for this tool. James has modified code to create the hand and has contacted one of the children’s hospitals hoping to provide his creation to help others. At this time, the hospital spokesperson has expressed an interest in using the prototype to gain more interest in this cause. James is also finding ways to help those in need whenever he can. For the last four years, he has facilitated bike drives with his school robotics team to provide bikes for lower income families in the Metuchen area. James continues to find ways to help others through technology tools.
