Monthly Message From NCEA Interim President – June 2016

Tom's Message PSD June

The end of another school year is here! For some, this day has already been checked off the calendars and, for others, it is just around the corner. It is a time of celebration, gratitude and reflection. I’ve rounded out this academic year talking to educators about the future of Catholic schools.

Last month, I had the pleasure of spending time with the superintendents of Catholic schools for the 12 dioceses in California.  They took time out of their busy schedules to talk about their successes and challenges as leaders of Catholic school systems.  The topics were many:  identifying ways to increase enrollment, understanding various school governance models, identifying specific areas of need for future professional development and faith formation, using data to demonstrate academic performance and acting with the end in mind. The conversation was great and reflected the deep relationships these superintendents had formed with one another over the years, and the wisdom they shared. They talked about difficult things with passion and an absolute commitment to the common good of Catholic schools and the students they serve (and will serve in the future!).

One way these superintendents have collaborated with one another and with the Bishops of California, is through the recently published document, “Our Catholic Schools in California: A Stellar Past, A Robust Future.” This document provides a vision for Catholic schools and some specific actions for growth, actions that I think are applicable beyond the state of California.

My visit with the California superintendents was just one of the recent discussions I’ve had with many Catholic educators during my time as interim president at NCEA. I’ve spent time with local groups from the Midwest, New England and the South. Whether you are a principal, teacher, pastor or serve schools at the diocesan level, I want you to know that these meetings have been fruitful and give great witness to the passion, wisdom and deep faith of all who work so hard to support the 6,500 Catholic schools in the United States.

It is truly my pleasure and honor to be at these meetings, to listen, participate and help share best practices across the country.  One common topic that I continue to hear about more than anything else is growth.   The growth of Catholic schools is a core focus for the future because it is so clear that our schools are a great gift of the Church and to the nation. We need to boldly tell people about them.

This summer, NCEA will continue working to serve those Catholic educators across the country. Before you head out for the summer months, let us know how we can better serve you to meet your needs. We are always here to help.

Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Thomas Burnford, D.Min.
