As the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio came to a close Sunday, August 21, we would like to recognize all of the accomplishments of the athletes who attended a Catholic school have contributed to the U.S. team.
Townley Haas – Benedictine College Preparatory in Richmond, VA
Townley placed 1st in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and 5th in the men’s 200m freestyle.
Katie Ledecky – Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart & Little Flower School in Bethesda, MD
Katie placed 1st in four events, women’s 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle relay along with a 2nd place finish in women’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Kelly Murphy – Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, IL
Kelly placed 3rd in the women’s indoor volleyball tournament.
Missy Franklin – Regis Jesuit High School in Aurora, CO
Missy placed 1st in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
Kerri Walsh Jennings – Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, CA
Kerri placed 3rd in women’s beach volleyball.
Amanda Polk – Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA
Amanda placed 1st in the women’s coxed eight.
Leah Smith – Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, PA
Leah placed 1st in the women’s 4x200m freestyle relay, 3rd in the women’s 400m freestyle and 6th in the women’s 800m freestyle.
Kyle Snyder – Our Lady of Good-Counsel High School in Olney, MD
Kylewon gold in the men’s freestyle 97 kg becoming the youngest U.S. wrestling champion.
Jack Conger – Our Lady of Good-Counsel High School in Olney, MD
Jack placed 1st in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
Sydney McLaughlin – Union Catholic Regional High School in Scotch Plains, NJ
Sydney placed 5th in the women’s 400m hurdles semifinals.
Joe Maloy – Wildwood Catholic High School in North Wildwood, NJ
Joe placed 23rd in the men’s individual triathlon.
Kelsey Robinson – St. Francis High School in Wheaton, IL
Kelsey placed 3rd in the women’s indoor volleyball tournament.
Elena Delle Donne – Ursuline Catholic Girls Academy in Wilmington, DE
Elena placed 1st in the women’s basketball tournament.
Carmello Anthony – Towson Catholic High School in Towson, MD
Carmello won gold as the U.S. men’s basketball team toppled Serbia 96-66.
Klay Thompson – Santa Margarita Catholic High School in in Rancho Santa Margarita, CA
Klay won gold as the U.S. men’s basketball team toppled Serbia 96-66.
Ryan Held – Sacred Heart-Griffin High School
Ryan placed 1st in the men’s 4x100m freestyle relay.
Sue Bird – Christ the King Regional High School
Sue placed 1st in the women’s basketball tournament.
Gunnar Bentz – St. Pius X in Atlanta GA
Gunnar placed 1st in men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
Connor Dwyer – Loyola Academy in Wilmette IL.
Connor placed 1st in men’s 4x200m freestyle relay and 3rd in men’s 200m freestyle.
Brett Bonanni – Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana CA.
