Keeping a promise to his students at St. John Vianney Catholic School in the city of Wyoming, principal Gregg Bruno climbed onto the school roof on Thursday, December 15, 2016 to spend the freezing cold day on the roof of the school. His roof-sit was the incentive for students to bring in 335 gifts for Toys for Tots – they exceeded that goal and collected 485 brand-new presents for the annual Christmas gift drive.
The school’s Toys for Tots collection contributed to WZZM 13’s School Spirit Challenge, the TV station’s effort that sees West Michigan students donate presents to children in need every year. As an additional reward, St. John Vianney students also had a pajama day.
Not to let his roof-sit keep him from his work, Mr. Bruno brought his iPad with him and stayed busy. Students enjoying recess chatted from the blacktop with Mr. Bruno and tossed a few snowballs up to the roof, and band students brought out their instruments to play some Christmas carols for him. Parents stopped by too, to deliver hot coffee and make sure he stayed warm despite below freezing temperatures.
