  • Mark your calendars for Summer Professional Development!
    • The 2019 NCEA New Directions STREAM 3.0 Conference is taking place June 17 – 18, 2019 in Parsippany, NJ. More information about this innovative and engaging conference is available at www.NCEA.org/stream. Registration is scheduled to open in the next few weeks!
    • The Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY is once again the host hotel for the Seventeenth Annual Education Law Symposium (July 11 – 14, 2019). Registration is now available on the event website. Questions and requests for more information can be directed to [email protected].
    • The Institute for Catholic School Leaders (ICSL) will be July 14 – 17, 2019 in Indianapolis, IN. Please check www.NCEA.org/icsl for details about this dynamic leadership conference! Registration will open at the end of March.
    • Apply for Bearing Witness™, a six-day, all-expenses-paid intensive study experience designed to give you resources to bring the lessons of anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and modern-day prejudice to your students and communities. Open to educators of grades 6-12 in the areas of social studies, English and religion. The Summer Institute is funded by the Eileen Ludwig Greenland Endowment Fund with support from the Howard M. Bender and Stanley S. Bender Institute. Hotel accommodations, local transportation, and meals taking place during the program are covered through these funds. A limited number of travel scholarships of up to $225 will be available for participants living outside of the Washington, D.C. metro area to help cover transportation to/from Washington, D.C.
    • Apply to attend The Library of Congress Summer Teacher Institutes, which are week-long professional development programs for K-12 educators in the nation’s capital. Participants will learn to teach using primary sources from the Library of Congress’ resources. The Library will offer three different Institutes. Application details are available online. Application Deadline: March 10, 2019.
    • The Religious Freedom Center of the Freedom Forum Institute will host the Summer Religious Studies Institute at the Newseum. The program will convene K-12 independent school educators in the nation’s capital to explore issues of religious literacy, civil dialogue, and the challenges and opportunities of navigating religious diversity in the classroom. Educators will learn about religious studies as academic discipline and have the opportunity to develop working relationships with leading religious studies subject matter experts and curricular resource providers.

Major Announcements & Deadlines

  • Please see the attached job announcement for the NCEA Chief Program Officer. The CPO reports to the president/CEO, and is part of a four person senior leadership team including the president/CEO, chief advancement and business development officer and chief administrative officer. Information regarding the job and application requirements is provided in the job announcement.
  • This summer, the OIEC 2019 International Congress will be in New York, June 5 – 8, 2019, at Fordham University, Lincoln Campus. The theme for the congress has been approved by the Congregation for Catholic Education and will put the spotlight on Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si, and concentrate on the contributions of Catholic schools around the world working to help educate society to safeguard our common home. The OIEC hopes to welcome at least 1,000 people from around the world, representing about 210,000 schools in more than 100 countries — 46 million students. For more information and to register for the congress, go to: https://www.oieccongress.com.
  • A bill proposing a federal tax credit-based scholarship program could provide a boost for parents who want to send their children to Catholic school, and it has the backing of NCEA. Read Sister Dale McDonald’s interview with the Catholic News Agency for more details.
  • The annual NCEA financial data survey will be sent to all schools in the coming weeks. This annual survey is done electronically in collaboration with the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA). NCEA will send an email requesting your participation and providing access information to the online survey. Please watch for it in your email and complete it in a timely manner.

  • NCEA is pleased to offer Lenten resources that enable Catholic educators to guide their students during this season of prayer and penance. Filled with research-based strategies, publications, website and technological tools, these resources will provide insight and best practices for Lent. 
  • Please share this month’s Parent News Flyer (in English and Spanish) with your school families. Previous Parent News Flyers are available on the NCEA website. 
  • The Diocese of Phoenix has published a Guidebook for Diversified Learners. The intent of this resource is to provide guidance for support of exceptional learners in Catholic schools. Catholic schools, as the largest ministry of the Catholic Church, have a profound educational responsibility in welcoming all types of learners. 
  • 2019 E-rate Applications are now open. Please refer to the NCEA website for information pertaining to application dates, procedures and links to the necessary forms.
