For school communities that have submitted the National Blue Ribbon application months ago, September brings much anticipation of national recognition by the United States Department of Education. Between now and the end of September, the Secretary of Education will proudly and enthusiastically announce the 2017 National Blue Ribbon Schools. As we anticipate this year’s broadcast, let’s learn more about the National Blue Ribbon Award and the application process.
Catholic schools have always been recognized for the two traditional fruits of a Catholic education: strong faith formation and academics second to none. However, as competition for student enrollment has increased, Catholic schools have benefited from recognition through this very prestigious program – National Blue Ribbon Schools Award.” Diane Starkovich, Ph.D.
What is the National Blue Ribbon Award?
Since 1982, the National Blue Ribbon Award is the highest award bestowed to schools by the United States Department of Education. Recognition such as this can bring welcomed and deserved attention to schools and go a long way to enhance marketing efforts. As stated on the Council for American Private Education (CAPE) website, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools based on their overall academic excellence or their progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. More than 7,500 schools across the country have been presented with this coveted award. The National Blue Ribbon School award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families, and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. National Blue Ribbon Schools are honored each fall at a recognition ceremony in Washington, DC. The applications from the award-winning schools are posted on the US Department of Education website.
Why should our school apply for the award?
The National Blue Ribbon School flag gracing an entry or flying overhead is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning. Besides the national recognition, the National Blue Ribbon School Award can greatly enhance a school’s marketing campaign. Parents and community members will recognize the school as an educational model in the areas of spirituality, academics, and leadership.
