CLS 2016: To Nurture and Retain Great Catholic School Leaders Part 2

Catholic school diocesan leaders continued their leadership and professional development at the Catholic Leadership Summit with the second of a two-day general session on the topic “To Nurture and Retain Great Catholic School Leaders.” This session is the final installment of a three-part leadership series that began in Los Angeles in February 2015. Attendees allowed their assumptions to be challenged by looking outside their “traditional Catholic school box” and gained a fresh perspective with which to look at leadership issues.

Today, NCEA welcomed Fredy Padovan, Dean of Innovation at Immaculata-La Salle High School in Miami, Florida. Mr. Padovan has been acknowledged by Apple and NCEA for his outstanding work in technology and innovation. His presentation focused on great companies and working with the millennial generation (millennials).

By 2020, 50% of the workforce will be made up of millennials. Mr. Padovan shared that the millennial mindset is made up of three characteristics: socially conscious, tech-driven and collaborative.

“Enjoyment and belonging are the two things key to long-term retention,” explained Mr. Padovan. “The social aspect of working is more important than ever.”

After outlining the characteristics and suggestions for working with millennials, Mr. Padovan provided examples of how members of the corporate world – Microsoft, Google and Apple – are  training and building this demographic.

The session included time throughout the presentation for audience members to break out to discuss topics further such as what attracted them to the work of Catholic school education, how they are working and promoting the millennial mindset and how they are fostering transparency in the workplace.

Following the presentation, attendees engaged in a question and answer session, connecting this important topic to their work in Catholic education leadership.

The conversation “To Nurture and Retain Great Catholic School Leaders” was a two-day topic at CLS. Yesterday, Dan Krug, General Manager of Digital Innovation for Nucor Corporation discussed the importance of innovative in leadership and how to share your story.
